About

East Cockermouth lies on the edge of the Lake District National Park, where the rivers Cocker and Derwent meet. The area is characterised by farmland and low fells, with the town itself historically an industrial centre for milling and brewing. The landscape gradually rises westward towards the high fells.

Buttermere is a valley containing a lake of the same name, enclosed by steep fells like Haystacks and High Stile. The valley floor is occupied by pasture and the small villages of Buttermere and Gatesgarth. A flat, shaded path circles the lake, passing through a natural tunnel carved through the rock at its northern end.
