About

Eastney sits at the eastern end of Portsea Island in Portsmouth, fronting the Solent and Langstone Harbour. The shoreline here includes Eastney Beach, a long stretch of shingle with a promenade that meets the sea at the tip of the island. At that tip lies the Victorian Eastney Battery, its casemates and concrete work set into the shoreline and visible from the promenade, a reminder of coastal defence installations that protected the harbour entrance. The coast also has slips and small boat access used by local sailors and anglers.

The neighbourhood behind the shore is mainly residential, with local shops, a community centre and pockets of older terrace housing mixing with later housing developments. A former Royal Marines barracks occupies a prominent site on Eastney Road and has been adapted for new uses alongside its parade ground. Small businesses, social clubs and volunteer groups organise activities around the foreshore and inland green spaces, while bus routes link Eastney to the city centre and other parts of Portsmouth. The area’s layout and shoreline make everyday seaside activity a common part of local life.
