About

Ellesmere is a market town in north Shropshire, close to the English–Welsh border. The town sits on gently rolling farmland and grew around a traditional market square where local shops and services cluster. Public buildings and rows of older houses record the town’s role as a trading and farming centre; Ellesmere also lent its name to the Ellesmere Canal, part of the transport networks developed during the industrial period.

The town is set beside Ellesmere Mere, a large natural lake within the meres and mosses landscape. A path circles much of the shore, and the mere contains several small wooded islands that sit low in the water; the lake draws walkers, birdwatchers and small-boat activity. Local clubs and seasonal events use the green spaces along the water, while hedgerows and ditches around the town reflect a long history of pasture and peat extraction. County roads link Ellesmere with nearby villages, and the town functions as a service centre for the surrounding rural area.
