Featherstone East & Essington

Featherstone East & Essington is a ward in South Staffordshire covering the villages of Featherstone and Essington on the northern fringe of the West Midlands conurbation, just north of Wolverhampton. The area combines residential streets, local shops, primary schools and community centres that serve long-standing village communities and newer housing pockets. Regular bus links connect to nearby urban centres while quieter lanes lead out to surrounding farmland. Local clubs and parish groups run sports pitches and village halls that anchor weekly activities and seasonal events.

Industry shaped the area: small-scale coal workings once dotted the landscape and the late 18th-century Wyrley and Essington Canal was cut to carry coal toward Wolverhampton and the Trent. The canal runs through or alongside parts of the ward and its towpath is used by walkers and anglers; traces of old coal pits survive as changed ground and reclaimed green space. Fields, hedgerows and pockets of woodland surround the villages, offering a mix of short countryside walks that link to wider footpath networks across South Staffordshire.
