About

Fishponds lies about 3.5 miles northeast of Bristol city centre along the A432. The high street runs along Fishponds Road and Stapleton Road and is made up of shops, cafés and local services. The suburb expanded in the 19th century with housing built for workers at nearby factories and workshops; many terraces from that period remain. The place-name records an older landscape: medieval fish ponds once lay in the low ground and gave the area its name.

Transport links include regular bus services into the city and traces of the old Midland Railway; Fishponds railway station closed in 1965 and parts of the former line can still be picked out in the street pattern. Community life revolves around small businesses, churches, schools and community centres, and several former industrial buildings have been adapted for light industry or studios. The result is a residential neighbourhood where local shops and community organisations shape the streets.
