Flimby, Ellenborough & Broughton Moor

Flimby, Ellenborough and Broughton Moor lie on the coastal plain of Cumberland beside the Solway Firth. Flimby sits at the shoreline and is served by the Cumbrian Coast Line, its single platform providing a rail link along the coast. Ellenborough is set a short distance inland on the lower course of the River Ellen, with lanes and fields oriented to the river valley. Broughton Moor occupies higher ground to the south-east, where enclosed farmland meets parcels of land shaped by former mineral working.

The local landscape combines farmland, small residential streets and pockets of coastal marsh. Remnants of past mining and quarrying — tips, cuttings and old track lines — are visible around Broughton Moor and form part of the informal footpath network. Flimby’s shore includes tidal flats used by wading birds at low tide, and village routes offer direct access to the coast. Community life centres on village halls, parish churches and a handful of shops, keeping most everyday services within walking distance.
