About

Foulness and The Wakerings ward is a remote, low-lying area of coastal marshland and islands at the northeastern edge of the Rochford district. The landscape is dominated by expansive tidal creeks, grazing marshes, and sea walls, with a sparse, scattered population. Much of the land is owned by the Ministry of Defence, used historically for weapons testing, which has limited development and preserved its isolated character. The primary settlement is the village of Churchend on Foulness Island.

Access to the mainland is controlled via a private military road across the bridge from Great Wakering, with public access generally restricted. The economy has long been tied to agriculture and the military presence. The surrounding Maplin Sands form a vast intertidal area, creating a significant habitat for overwintering birds and coastal wildlife. This isolation has fostered a strong, independent community identity among residents.
