About

Fremington and Instow sit on the southern shore of the River Taw estuary in North Devon, where tidal channels and salt marshes shape a changing shoreline. At low tide wide sandbanks and mudflats are exposed, and the estuary becomes a working landscape for birdlife, boats and walkers. Narrow lanes run up from the foreshore into farmland and orchards, and a network of public footpaths links the two villages to the quayside and the coastal edge.

The name Fremington Quay still marks the area’s industrial past: clay and other cargoes were loaded there from the 19th century, and traces of the former rail sidings and loading sheds remain in the quay area. Instow has a long sandy foreshore that supports small craft, sailing dinghies and a slipway used by local clubs, with a row of houses and a few shops close to the shore. Together the villages combine tidal country, a working quay and coastal recreation within a compact stretch of estuary frontage.
