About

Garswood is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, historically part of Lancashire. It lies close to the boundary with the Wigan borough, between Ashton-in-Makerfield and Haydock. The village has a small commercial centre with shops, a primary school and community centre, and green spaces around the lanes and fields. Garswood railway station provides regular Northern services to Wigan and Liverpool, giving a direct link for commuters and shoppers.

The settlement grew around 19th-century coal mining and traces of that past remain in the landscape: field paths often follow the lines of former colliery tramways and small air shafts appear at field edges. Local clubs and parish groups use halls and parks for sport and events, while the network of lanes and public footpaths connects the village with neighbouring countryside. Day-to-day life is oriented around local services, rail links and the patchwork of working farmland and post-industrial woodland that defines this part of St Helens.
