The Garvagh ward is situated in the central part of the Causeway Coast and Glens district, inland from the coast. It encompasses the village of Garvagh itself and surrounding rural townlands, characterised by agricultural land and the River Agivey. The landscape is defined by low, rolling drumlins and hedgerows, with forestry plantations on some slopes. The area has a strong agricultural heritage, with farming remaining a central economic activity.
A focal point is the Garvagh Forest and its adjacent museum, centred on a historic manor house. The area is connected by the A29 road, linking it to nearby market towns. The local community is served by schools, shops, and sporting facilities centred on the village. The rural setting provides a contrast to the busier coastal wards to the north.
