About

Gosport is a coastal district on the south coast of Hampshire, occupying a peninsula between the Solent and Portsmouth Harbour. The borough includes the town of Gosport and settlements such as Alverstoke, Stokes Bay and Lee-on-the-Solent. Shoreline faces across the water to Portsmouth; a frequent foot and vehicle ferry links the town centre with Portsmouth Harbour. Paths along the Solent and local promenades provide access to beaches and boat slips, and a network of commuter routes connects the district to the wider Portsmouth conurbation.

Naval history shapes much of the area. Shore establishments such as HMS Sultan and the former Royal Hospital Haslar sit within the borough; Haslar's waterfront has been redeveloped around a marina. Sea defences and batteries include Fort Gilkicker at the entrance to Stokes Bay, one of the river and coastal fortifications that remain around the harbour. Lee-on-the-Solent preserves the footprint of the old naval air station HMS Daedalus. Small museums, former ordnance yards and brick-built powder magazines reflect the district's long association with maritime and naval engineering.
