Grandpont & New Hinksey

Grandpont and New Hinksey lie immediately south of Oxford city centre, between Abingdon Road (A4144) and the River Thames (locally the Isis). The area centres on Grandpont Road and the adjoining streets of New Hinksey, with residential terraces, shops, schools and Hinksey Park, a public green with sports pitches and a community centre. Abingdon Road provides direct bus links into the centre and beyond, while local lanes lead down to riverside paths and the flood meadows that fringe the river.

The place-name recalls the medieval "grand pont," a causeway that carried the main southern approach across seasonal marshes; its line is still reflected in the street layout. Low-lying meadows and pastures on the western edge remain important for drainage and for wildlife, and the Thames towpath gives pedestrian access along the river. A railway corridor to the south forms a clear boundary, and pockets of allotments and community spaces sit between housing and open land, creating a neighbourhood-scale feel.
