About

Grange and Cartmel ward encompasses the coastal town of Grange-over-Sands and the historic village of Cartmel, set on the southern edge of the Furness Peninsula. The area is characterised by its position on the shallow, silted expanse of the Kent estuary, which creates a wide, scenic foreshore at low tide. This gentle coastline is backed by the wooded limestone hummock of Hampsfield Fell.

Inland, the landscape transitions to the flat, agricultural plain of the Cartmel Valley, with its patchwork of fields and hedgerows. The ward is defined by this mix of estuary, farmland, and woodland. Cartmel Priory, a medieval church with its distinctive square tower, has been a central landmark for centuries. The area is also known for the Cartmel Racecourse, one of the country's smallest National Hunt courses, located just outside the village.
