Grassmoor & Holmewood

Grassmoor and Holmewood sit in North East Derbyshire, a short drive south of Chesterfield and north of Clay Cross. The area grew around coal workings in the 19th and 20th centuries; former pits and spoil tips were reshaped into public green space. Grassmoor Country Park occupies reclaimed land with raised mounds, shallow ponds and reed beds that formed where spoil and subsidence were flattened and landscaped, and paths follow old colliery tracks. Street patterns still reflect the mining era, with rows of cottages and back lanes that link the two villages.

The local economy mixes long-established workshops and a larger estate that replaced some colliery sites, alongside small shops and a community centre. There are primary schools, sports pitches and a village parade that hosts seasonal events. Many residents commute to Chesterfield or further afield, using local roads and bus links. Signposts to former pit sites and small plaques in public spaces record the area’s mining past, and community groups maintain allotments, pocket parks and walking routes that use the reclaimed landscape.
