About

Greengate and Blackfriars sit on Salford’s riverside, set along the north bank of the River Irwell. The area grew up in the 19th century around mills, workshops and red-brick warehouses; many of those buildings remain, their facades punctuated by hoist apertures and iron loading rings still set into the brickwork beside former loading bays. Streets here are compact, with a mix of narrow cobbled lanes and later grid layouts that reflect different phases of industrial expansion. Several small bridges and river crossings connect the district to the opposite bank.

Today the neighbourhood combines converted lofts, low-rise office space and independent trades that use former industrial plots. Ground-floor units host cafés, repair shops and studios that open onto the riverside walks. Short stretches of quay wall and pedestrian routes give frequent views of the water and the passing river traffic. Ongoing development sits alongside retained industrial fabric, so the area reads as a working riverside quarter where older construction and new uses sit side by side.
