About

Hemsby sits on the Norfolk coast, a short drive north from Great Yarmouth. The settlement fronts a long stretch of sandy beach backed by dunes and a line of concrete groynes and revetments that mark decades of shoreline management as the sea edge has moved. Holiday parks, caravan sites and slipways line the seafront and small boats are launched for shore and inshore fishing. Local footpaths run along the dunes and provide access to the beach and to pockets of saltmarsh where waders and gulls gather at low tide.

Ormesby refers to the nearby inland parishes, chiefly Ormesby St Margaret and Ormesby St Michael, set on low-lying agricultural land with field drains and lanes that thread between farms. The villages are centred on a parish church and a handful of cottages, with landscape shaped by drainage and reedbeds that link visually to the Broads country to the west. Quiet country roads connect Ormesby to neighbouring villages and small nature reserves used by people watching overwintering waterfowl and spring passage migrants.
