Hereford Central

Hereford city centre is the county town of Herefordshire, centred on the Cathedral Close and the High Street. Hereford Cathedral stands beside the River Wye and contains the Mappa Mundi, a medieval world map from about 1300, and the medieval chained library. Streets such as High Town, Broad Street and High Street host a mix of independent shops, national chains and cafes, with the Old Market Shopping Centre and a regular market in the centre. Civic buildings, municipal services and small offices cluster around the High Street and the pedestrianised areas.

The River Wye runs through the central area, with riverside paths and greens used for markets and events. The cathedral precinct, closely set to the river, forms a focal point for heritage trails and guided walks. Public transport connections and main roads lead out to the county, while short walks from the core reach residential streets and local parks. For visitors and residents the central area combines shopping, civic functions and the cathedral's collections within a compact grid of streets.
