Hertford Castle

Hertford Castle ward forms the historic core of the county town. The area is centred on the grounds of Hertford Castle itself, a former royal palace with later additions, which now serves as the town's main municipal offices and gardens. The ward includes the surrounding streets of the old town, characterised by a mix of period buildings and local commerce. The River Lea flows through the southern part of the ward, passing close to the castle grounds.

A key feature is the Shire Hall, an 18th-century courthouse situated directly opposite the castle gates on Parliament Square. The ward's layout reflects its long history as an administrative centre, with streets like Fore Street and Railway Street hosting many independent shops and services. The area functions as the civic and commercial heart of the town, with regular markets held near the castle entrance.
