About

Ibstock and Ellistown sit side by side in North West Leicestershire, each shaped by 19th- and 20th-century industry. Ibstock grew around clay extraction and brickmaking; the town is still associated with a large brickworks that has influenced local employment and the pattern of pits and worksites. The parish church of St Denys provides a visible medieval anchor in the townscape, and street layouts reflect phases of industrial expansion and later housing development.

Ellistown began as a miners’ village linked to nearby collieries, and its terraces and rows of workers’ cottages record that history. Remnants of colliery infrastructure and reclaimed pit ponds remain visible in places, now woven into green corridors and local footpaths. Local shops, community halls and sports pitches serve a population whose daily life is grounded in commuting, small-scale employment and local services rather than tourism. The area’s character comes from its industrial legacy and the way former working landscapes have been absorbed into everyday settlement.
