About

Kearsley and Stoneclough sit in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, north-west England, with the River Irwell running through Stoneclough. The A666 and local rail services provide direct links into Bolton and Manchester, while stretches of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal and associated towpaths follow parts of the valley. Stoneclough meets Ringley at an old stone bridge by St Saviour’s church, and the riverside there marks a clear change from the built-up streets to the waterway corridor.

The area grew around coal and textile working in the 19th century, and former mill sites and rows of workers’ housing reflect that history. Today local shops, schools and community halls serve a largely residential population, and riverside and canal paths are used for walking and cycling. Ongoing regeneration and repair projects have focused on repairing industrial fabric and improving access to the Irwell corridor, maintaining links to nearby employment centres while keeping the local pattern of streets and waterways.
