The area is defined by its tidal estuary, extensive salt marshes, and mudflats that are exposed at low tide. The landscape is low-lying and open, with the limestone outcrop of Arnside Knott providing a distinctive wooded hill.

This is an area significantly governed by the tidal cycle, with a fast-moving tidal bore known as the Arnside Bore occurring on high spring tides. The estuary and its surrounding habitats form part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Land use is primarily agricultural, mixed with small settlements and areas of woodland.
