Streets around the centre include terraces and short commercial runs that reflect 19th‑century development; bus stops and a short walk to the railway station connect the area to surrounding towns. Immediately north of the central area the Trent and Mersey Canal appears, and the canal corridor passes into the pair of Harecastle tunnels where Brindley’s original bore sits beside Telford’s later, larger cut.
