Manifold

The Manifold ward is located in the Staffordshire Moorlands district, encompassing a portion of the Peak District National Park. Its landscape is defined by the valleys of the River Manifold and its tributary, the River Hamps, which carve through limestone plateau. This geology creates a characteristic dry valley system, where these rivers disappear underground in summer months, leaving stony beds. The area includes the villages of Warslow, Butterton, and Grindon, which serve as central points for the surrounding farmland and upland pastures.

The terrain is primarily agricultural, with livestock farming being a key activity on the grassy hills. A notable feature is the Manifold Way, a traffic-free trail for walkers and cyclists that follows the course of the old Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway along the river valley. This path connects to the extensive cave systems and rock formations found in the area, which are significant for both natural history and archaeological study. The ward's environment is managed with consideration for its national park status, balancing rural life with conservation.
