About

Millom ward lies on the southwestern coast of Cumberland, within the Lake District National Park. Its landscape is dominated by the estuary of the River Duddon and the expansive sands of the Duddon Sands. The area includes the town of Millom itself, along with surrounding villages such as Haverigg and Kirksanton. This is a low-lying coastal plain, with views across the water to the Furness peninsula and the distant hills of the southern Lake District.

The ward's history is closely linked to iron mining and processing, an industry that shaped its development. Remnants of this past, including the former Millom Ironworks site, are part of the local heritage. The Haverigg shoreline features a lighthouse constructed from local stone. A network of footpaths crosses the saltmarshes and mosses, providing access to the coastal environment and its wildlife.
