Murlough ward encompasses a stretch of the County Down coastline, centred on the village of Dundrum. The area is dominated by the presence of Dundrum Bay and the tidal mudflats of the inner bay, which are internationally significant for wintering waterfowl. The landscape includes the grassy dunes and heathland of the Murlough National Nature Reserve, one of the oldest designated nature reserves in Ireland.
Inland, the ward contains a mix of low-lying agricultural land and small settlements like Maghera and Clough. The historic ruins of Dundrum Castle overlook the bay from a prominent glacial drumlin. Economic activity is linked to the sea, agriculture, and local tourism focused on the beach and conservation area.
