Newton & Yealmpton

The Newton & Yealmpton ward encompasses a rural expanse in the South Hams, characterised by rolling farmland and the broad tidal estuary of the River Yealm. The area includes the villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, situated on opposite banks of the river, connected by a foot ferry. The landscape is defined by quiet country lanes, wooded creeks, and significant areas of ancient woodland.

Much of the local economy and community life is linked to the water, with sailing and boatbuilding being longstanding activities. The ward contains several designated conservation areas and sites of special scientific interest, protecting its estuarine habitats. The area maintains a distinct, quiet character, separate from the larger tourist centres elsewhere in the district.
