North Ely

North Ely sits immediately north of Ely’s central streets and is primarily residential, with a mix of housing from mid-20th-century terraces to more recent estates. Local amenities include convenience shops, a community centre, green playing fields and regular bus services that link the neighbourhood with the city centre and the railway station a short drive away. Streets in the area are arranged around small local parks and allotments, and day-to-day life is centred on neighborhood facilities rather than tourist routes.

Beyond the housing the landscape quickly gives way to fenland and farmland, where straight drainage channels and low embankments run between arable fields. Small concrete pump houses and sluices sit at field edges and remain part of the working drainage system that keeps the surrounding land arable. On clear days the low skyline and the ordered pattern of drains and tracks make the shift from urban plots to open fenland clear, and walkers often follow the field paths that lead out from the northern streets.
