North End West & Whale Island

North End West sits on the northern side of Portsea Island as a primarily residential pocket with rows of terraced houses, local shops and small community facilities. Streets lead toward the northern shore and provide direct routes into the wider Portsmouth grid, with bus links serving commuters. Everyday life here is shaped by neighbourhood schools, allotments and corner stores rather than large commercial centres, and the area has a mixture of council and privately owned housing that reflects several phases of 20th-century development.

Whale Island lies immediately to the north, separated from Portsea Island by a narrow channel and connected by a short causeway. The island was built up from harbour dredgings in the mid-19th century and later became the Royal Navy’s shore establishment HMS Excellent, still used for gunnery training and naval engineering. Public access is limited; much of the island’s footprint is taken by ranges, workshops and parade areas. From North End West you get clear sightlines to the island’s masts and drill areas, which mark its long association with Portsmouth’s naval infrastructure.
