Oakhill, Horrington & Chewton Mendip

Oakhill, Horrington and Chewton Mendip sit on the southern flanks of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, where lanes run from rolling pasture up onto limestone ridges. The land shows layers of agricultural use: small mixed farms, hedged fields and pockets of woodland. Drainage patterns are marked by springs and short streams that can disappear into swallets where the limestone goes underground, and terraces of old quarrying are visible in places that now support scrub and grassland.

The settlements are compact: stone cottages, parish churches and village halls cluster along narrow roads and around greens and ponds. Local life centres on small-scale farming, village amenities and a network of public footpaths that link the three communities and give direct access to the Mendip escarpment. You can pass from a low-lying lane into limestone pasture in a short walk, and find traditional stone walls, old gateposts and a scattering of disused quarries that record the area’s history of stone-working and lead mining.
