Old Town

The Old Town ward encompasses the historic core of Stevenage, centered around the original medieval settlement. This area retains a traditional market town character with its mix of Georgian, Victorian, and earlier buildings. The layout is defined by streets like the High Street and St George's Way, which converge at the ancient parish church of St Nicholas. Local businesses, independent shops, and pubs operate from these older premises, serving the residential community in the surrounding streets.

The area is distinctly separate from the post-war New Town development, creating a clear historical contrast. A central feature is the triangle of St George's Square, which hosts a regular street market. The ward includes several conservation areas protecting its architectural heritage, with landmarks like the Tudor-style Old Town Hall. Residential streets with houses of varying periods extend from the core, bordered by areas like the Aston and Broom Barns conservation area to the south.
