About

Olney is a market town in the north of the Milton Keynes unitary area, centred on a small market place and a high street of independent shops and civic buildings. The town is closely associated with William Cowper and John Newton; the Cowper and Newton Museum sits beside the church where the pair worked on the Olney Hymns. Each Shrove Tuesday the town stages the Olney Pancake Race, a long-running local custom that draws residents into the market place for a short, fast route between landmarks. The town sits close to the Great Ouse valley and has a network of footpaths that lead into surrounding farmland.

A few miles north is the village of Lavendon, set among arable fields and hedgerows. The village retains a compact plan with a parish church and village hall at its core, and several public footpaths link Lavendon to neighbouring lanes and field systems. Local farming and seasonal field patterns remain prominent in daily life, and small community events and services serve residents across both settlements within the Milton Keynes authority.
