Openshaw & Gorton North

Openshaw and Gorton North lie in the east of the City of Manchester, not in the neighbouring borough of Tameside. The ward sits along Ashton Old Road and parts of the Ashton Canal corridor, with a mix of housing, shopping parades and former industrial sites. Local services include primary and secondary schools, community centres and railway links on the line between Manchester Piccadilly and stations to the east. Open spaces include Gorton Park and smaller recreation grounds used for sport and community events.

Gorton has a long industrial history: the Beyer, Peacock locomotive works once occupied land here and shaped terraces and street patterns around the yard. The 19th-century friary known as Gorton Monastery sits near Gorton Green and was restored for use as an events and community venue, its stonework and internal cloister visible from surrounding streets. Recent regeneration has focused on converting former mill and factory plots to light industry, social housing and local retail, which guide everyday routines in the area.
