About

Romiley and Compstall lie within the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, side by side along the valley of the River Goyt. Romiley is centred on a small shopping precinct and a station on the Hope Valley Line, with regular services to Manchester Piccadilly and New Mills Central. Local life is tied to community halls, cricket and bowling clubs and a network of footpaths that lead down from residential streets to the riverside. The village retains a pattern of 19th- and 20th-century housing and pockets of woodland that frame the lanes.

East of Romiley, Compstall sits on the River Goyt and grew around a cluster of 19th-century mills. Those mill lodges and former quarry workings now form Etherow Country Park, where a string of ponds and lodges attracts wildfowl and anglers and where a footpath follows the river past stone bridges and the old mill channel. The area is used for walking, birdwatching and local boating on the lodges, with village shops and pubs clustered near Compstall Road.
