Romsey Town

Romsey, in the Test Valley of Hampshire, is a market town centred on a compact square and a main street of small shops and cafes. The town's best-known landmark is Romsey Abbey, the large former Benedictine church that dominates the skyline. Nearby King John's House, a medieval timber-framed building, hosts local history displays and occasional exhibitions. The market still operates in the town centre and independent traders occupy many of the older lanes, while civic buildings and a leisure centre sit close to the centre.

The River Test runs through Romsey and the town sits beside a series of water meadows that flood in winter and attract walkers and anglers. The Test here is a chalk stream noted for brown trout, and fishing beats and riverside paths are part of the town's pattern of green spaces. Residential streets fan out from the centre toward outlying parishes, with schools, community halls and small industrial areas serving local needs. Rail and road links connect Romsey with other parts of Hampshire but the town's character is shaped by the abbey, the river and the compact historic core.
