About

Royal Wootton Bassett is a market town and civil parish in Wiltshire. The town centre is arranged along a long High Street lined with stone and brick buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a market place and town hall at its heart. St Bartholomew's parish church stands close to the centre and its tower is a familiar local landmark. The street pattern and surviving coaching inns reflect the town's historic role as a stopping point on the main road across southern England.

The town gained the "Royal" prefix in 2011 after national recognition of public ceremonies held there when service personnel were brought through on repatriations, and that status is now part of its official name. Community amenities include shops, primary and secondary schools, and sports clubs; a weekly market and civic events make use of the market place and High Street. Housing extends from the centre into suburban streets and newer developments on former farmland, while regular bus services and road links provide local onward travel.
