Selsdon Park & Hamsey Green

Selsdon Park and Hamsey Green form a suburban band on Croydon’s southern edge, made up mainly of interwar and postwar housing, local shops and community facilities. The Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club sits at the heart of the area; the hotel is known locally for hosting the 1970 Conservative Party conference where the phrase “Selsdon Man” entered political language. Nearby patches of woodland and managed greenspace give the area a stronger tree cover than many inner suburbs, and paths through Selsdon Wood Local Nature Reserve attract walkers and birdwatchers.

Hamsey Green lies partly inside Croydon and partly in the Tandridge district, so the neighbourhood has a village feel with a parade of shops, pubs and small businesses clustered along the main road. Local buses link the area with other parts of south London, while community groups run clubs and events at the church halls and recreation grounds.
