About

The area around Shrivenham, Watchfield and Uffington sits in the Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire. Shrivenham is a village with the Defence Academy on its edge, and a mix of housing, shops and community facilities. Immediately to the north, Watchfield occupies part of the old RAF Watchfield site; parts of the former airfield are now given over to small businesses and leisure uses, alongside residential streets and allotments. Local lanes link the three communities and connect them with surrounding farmland and a network of public footpaths.

Uffington lies on the chalk scarp known as White Horse Hill, where the Uffington White Horse — a stylised hill figure about 110 metres long and dated to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age — is cut into the hillside. Above the figure sits Uffington Castle, an Iron Age hillfort, and nearby Dragon Hill retains a level, turf-cut summit often noted by walkers. Long-distance routes such as the Ridgeway follow the escarpment, giving direct access to the downs, arable fields and pasture.
