Slievekirk ward covers a residential area on the western edge of Derry City, bordering the River Foyle. The landscape is characterised by steeply rising terrain, with housing estates and local roads climbing the slopes. The ward includes the large Creggan estate, a significant post-war housing development, along with several primary and secondary schools serving the community. Views extend across the city centre and the wider Foyle basin from the higher ground.
The area is home to the Grianan Estate, a notable social housing scheme, and the Brooke Park recreational facility. Local commercial activity is focused along Central Drive, providing essential retail and services. The steep topography defines much of the area's layout, with the Creggan reservoir situated near the ward's upper boundary.
