South Derbyshire is a local government district in the East Midlands, covering the low-lying countryside and towns south of the city of Derby. The council is based in Swadlincote, which grew around coal and clay extraction and remains the district's largest urban area. Other settlements include Repton, Melbourne, Shardlow, Willington, Hilton and Overseal. Much of the district combines farmland, small woods and areas reclaimed from former industrial use as part of the National Forest planting programme. The Trent and Mersey Canal and the River Trent cross parts of the district and have shaped settlement and transport patterns.
Industrial history, waterways and archaeology are present across the district. Shardlow retains a cluster of late 18th- and 19th-century canal warehouses reflecting its role as an inland port on the Trent and Mersey Canal. Repton is home to St Wystan's church and an Anglo-Saxon burial site where sculptural stonework and a high-status grave were found, recorded in local archaeology. Forestry and wetland creation projects sit alongside surviving pits, clay works and light industry, while villages and market towns serve local agriculture and small businesses.
