About

Tameside is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, in North West England, lying east of Manchester. The borough covers Ashton-under-Lyne (the council seat), Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley, Dukinfield, Denton and Droylsden, extending onto the western slopes of the Pennines. Formed in 1974 from older municipal boroughs and urban districts, Tameside grew from 19th-century textile towns and retains networks of canals and railway lines that once served that industry. The River Tame flows through the area and gives the borough its name.

Industrial and water-management features sit close to open upland: Portland Basin Museum beside the Ashton Canal documents local manufacturing and transport history, while a chain of Longdendale reservoirs and moorland runs along the borough’s eastern edge — Torside Reservoir is one of the series. Town centres keep market streets, civic buildings and community facilities, and public footpaths link neighbourhoods to reservoir walks and the Pennine fringe.
