About

Tisbury occupies a small valley on the River Nadder, on the edge of the chalk uplands of Cranborne Chase. The village has a station on the West of England line, which links the Nadder valley to Salisbury and beyond, and a compact high street with a parish church and community facilities. Agriculture shapes the land here: arable fields and hedged lanes run up to flint walls and beech woodlands on the slopes, and Bronze Age barrows can be seen on the higher chalk to the south.

East and south of Tisbury the Donhead and Tollard Royal parishes form a scattering of hamlets, farms and lanes that climb away from the river. Donhead retains small stone farmsteads and a church hall at the village core. Tollard Royal sits on the northern rim of Cranborne Chase where chalk downland gives way to mixed pasture; on clear days the skyline is broken by long ridge lines and the patterns of ancient earthworks, visible as ridges and hollows across the fields.
