Tockholes, Edgworth & Hoddlesden

Tockholes, Edgworth and Hoddlesden sit within the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen on the western edge of the West Pennine Moors. The three settlements are linked by lanes, stone walls and fields that step up onto open moorland. Small reservoirs and farm dams punctuate the landscape; Wayoh Reservoir lies close to Edgworth with a long dam and causeway used by walkers. Built stone cottages, a village hall and a handful of local businesses mark the centres of each village, while public footpaths and bridleways lead out across grazing land and heather.

The area carries traces of the region’s rural and mill-era past in field boundaries and lane-side stonework, and villages still host weekly community activities and a pub or two. Birdsong and the sound of water are common on trail routes that link the reservoir shorelines to higher moorland. For visitors and residents the place offers short circular walks, quiet lanes for cycling and easy access back to Blackburn and Darwen for services and rail connections.
