About

Ventnor sits on the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, built on steep slopes that descend to a narrow seafront. The bay, promenade and the steep ravine known as Ventnor Chine give direct access from terraces to shingle and rock pools. A sheltered microclimate on the Undercliff allows collections of tree ferns, agaves and subtropical species to thrive at Ventnor Botanic Garden, which occupies terraces above the town and opens onto coastal paths. The town expanded in the Victorian era as a seaside resort and retains terraces and former spa buildings along the bay.

Wroxall lies inland on higher ground, centred on the Wroxall Abbey estate and its sunken gardens. The former manor buildings now house accommodation and event spaces; the grounds include walled gardens and orchard planting that are visited by local walkers. Narrow lanes and public footpaths link the village to surrounding farmland and to Ventnor’s coastal paths, offering a mix of village streets, parkland and stretches of rural hedgerow. Community events, a village hall and a small shop support local life, while seasonal bus services connect Wroxall with the island road network.
