About

Waverley is a local government district in Surrey, in South East England. It covers Farnham, Godalming, Haslemere and Cranleigh and surrounding villages. The district includes parts of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Greensand Ridge and the valley of the River Wey. Agriculture, woodland and waterways shape land use; heathland survives on the western fringe. Waverley takes its name from Waverley Abbey, the site of a ruined Cistercian monastery founded in 1128, and that abbey remains on the bank of the River Wey.

Market towns form the administrative and commercial centres: Farnham hosts a medieval castle and a historic town centre; Godalming has early municipal electricity history and a riverside route along the Wey; Haslemere sits at the southern end of the district with a local museum and rail link. Local planning balances conservation, housing and business premises, with light industry and service firms around transport nodes. Footpaths, canal restorations and common land provide public access across the district.
