About

Westward Ho! sits on the North Devon coast in Torridge, set beside a long sandy beach backed by dunes. The village grew as a Victorian seaside resort and retains a seafront promenade, shops and cafés that serve visitors and local residents. The South West Coast Path runs along the shoreline, and waves off the beach attract surfers. The exclamation mark in the village name comes from Charles Kingsley’s 19th‑century novel and remains part of road signs and maps.

Immediately inland and to the east, Northam South includes Northam Burrows, a broad stretch of common land of dunes, salt marsh and grass used for grazing and recreation. The Royal North Devon Golf Club occupies part of the burrows and dates from the 1860s, making it notable in the history of English golf. Paths cross the common and link to the shoreline, offering views across the bay and access to coastal habitats that support wading birds and shoreline plants. Local amenities and seasonal accommodation support a steady flow of day visitors and longer stays.
