About

Wigton sits on the River Wampool at the heart of a farming district and functions as the local market town. The town grew around its square and coach routes and still hosts regular markets and community events. Streets and buildings record phases of industry and trade; the line of the former branch railway out to Silloth is still visible in places and marks one route by which goods once moved to the coast.

Silloth lies on the shore of the Solway Firth with a wide grassy promenade running beside the seawall. The town was laid out as a 19th‑century port and resort and retains its grid of streets that lead down to the green. At low tide the Solway exposes broad mudflats and salt marsh that attract wading birds and shellfish beds, and the shoreline, the green and the adjacent links golf course form the local focus for walking and birdwatching.
