About

The area covers the northern end of Windermere and the town of Ambleside, where the lake narrows at Waterhead and the River Rothay runs through the centre. Ambleside contains several compact landmarks, including Bridge House set on a small packhorse bridge over Stock Ghyll and the short walk to Stock Ghyll Force. The town acts as a local hub for ferries and lake cruises that operate from Waterhead, and there is a mix of shopfronts, cafés and museums clustered around the main roads and riverside paths.

To the west the Langdales open into a classic U-shaped valley with the Langdale Pikes rising above crags and scree. Stickle Tarn sits in a corrie below Harrison Stickle and is a common turning point on routes onto the ridge. Little Langdale and side dales contain old quarry workings and farmsteads, with the Old Dungeon Ghyll and other inns marking the start of many footpaths and classic climbing routes. Roads from Ambleside lead into the valley, providing direct access for walkers and climbers.
