Acle sits on the River Bure where the A47 links Norwich with the coast. The town grew around a bridge and a small handful of boatyards; today a marina and moorings make it a common starting point for trips into the Broads. Surrounding low-lying land is worked as marsh and fen with drainage ditches and rough pasture that meet the river floodplain. Local services include a market square, shops and riverfront pubs that serve boaters and residents on the towpath and lanes that run beside the water.

Reedham lies a few miles downstream on the River Yare and occupies a narrow strip of riverbank and marsh. The village is served by a station on the Wherry Lines and the railway crosses the Yare on a swing bridge at Reedham, opening for river traffic. Reedham Common and adjacent grazing marshes sit between river and lane, with tracks that lead to quays and small boat slips. The area is used for low-intensity farming and river-based leisure rather than larger settlements.
