Rivington rises from the village onto the edge of the West Pennine Moors and is known for its man-made reservoirs and hill top features. The chain of Rivington reservoirs dates to the 19th century and sits beside a network of rights-of-way. On Rivington Pike a stone tower marks the skyline and nearby terraced gardens and follies were laid out by William Lever; stone steps, ponds and the hexagonal Pigeon Tower remain on paths used by walkers. The area is used year-round for walking, birdwatching and local events.
