Airedale and Ferry Fryston

Airedale and Ferry Fryston is a ward in the eastern part of the Wakefield district, situated near the River Aire and the A1 road. The area includes the communities of Airedale and Ferry Fryston itself, alongside smaller settlements like Brotherton. Historically, its development was closely linked to the mining industry, which shaped much of the local landscape and economy. The terrain is largely low-lying, with areas of open land alongside residential and former industrial sites.

The ward contains the distinctive Ferrybridge Power Station cooling towers, a major landmark visible for miles. Land use is mixed, with housing estates, retail parks, and distribution centres located on major routes. The area is also known for the Ferrybridge 'C' Power Station memorial garden, commemorating the 1965 collapse that claimed five lives. Transport connections are significant, with the Knottingley and Goole Canal and the East Coast Main Line railway running through the area.
